Life Is... #786405

"A grim joke told with a deadpan delivery."
Life Is... is a fiercely raw, darkly comedic poetry collection that strips back the polished veneer of polite society to document the friction of routine survival, deep-seated resentment, and existential isolation. Rejecting all traditional literary pretence, Darren Hobson uses sharp social realism to explore the heavy emotional bedrock of working-class life—where small everyday grievances curdle into a suffocating bitterness.
Do not expect safe, comfortable aesthetics. In this unyielding collection of free verse, ordinary domestic and industrial spaces become dangerous terrains where routine actions turn fatal. Hobson channels a blunt, conversational internal monologue to deliver sudden, hyper-violent pivots into cinematic horror—moving from gruesome bathroom accidents to graphic machinery tragedies and dark fantasies of retribution against schoolyard bullies. Yet, amidst the heavy landscape of physical decay, toxic relationships, and terminal diagnoses, a strange comfort emerges in desolate spaces, finding a haunting, gothic romance among the ghosts of an abandoned cemetery.
Driven by a rhythmic, hammering cadence packed with raw British colloquialisms, Life Is... weaponises deadpan dark comedy against absolute despair. This is a visceral, unfiltered transmission for those who know that reality is often far more terrifying than fiction.
