A Foundational Gothic Tale That Helped Create the Modern Literary Vampire

First published in 1819, The Vampyre by John William Polidori is one of the foundational works of vampire fiction and a landmark of the Gothic tradition. Short, atmospheric, and remarkably influential, it helped transform the vampire from a creature of folklore into the sophisticated, aristocratic predator that would later become so familiar in literature.

The story follows Aubrey, a wealthy young English gentleman who becomes fascinated by the mysterious Lord Ruthven during the London social season. When Ruthven plans a journey through Europe, Aubrey accompanies him, only gradually beginning to understand the disturbing nature of the man with whom he has associated himself.

Polidori’s great innovation lies in Lord Ruthven himself. Rather than presenting the vampire simply as a monstrous corpse, he creates an elegant, socially accomplished and dangerously charismatic figure capable of moving comfortably through aristocratic society. This model would exert a profound influence on later vampire literature.

The origins of the story are almost as famous as the tale itself. In the summer of 1816, Polidori travelled with Lord Byron to the Villa Diodati near Lake Geneva, where they spent time with Percy Bysshe Shelley and Mary Godwin, later Mary Shelley. During the celebrated gathering in which the group challenged one another to write supernatural stories, Mary began developing what would become Frankenstein, while Polidori eventually drew upon elements associated with Byron to create The Vampyre.

The work was initially published in a manner that led many readers to believe that Byron was its author, but Polidori was responsible for the story. Its combination of Gothic atmosphere, psychological unease, aristocratic decadence, and supernatural menace established a model that later writers would greatly expand.

This E-Bookarama Editions edition is an excellent choice for readers interested in Gothic classics, vampire literature, Romanticism, and the origins of supernatural fiction. Long before Bram Stoker’s Dracula, The Vampyre helped define the seductive and dangerous literary vampire and secured John Polidori an enduring place in the history of Gothic literature.
