First published on August 19, 1843, in the United States Saturday Post—the temporary title then used by the Saturday Evening Post—The Black Cat is one of Edgar Allan Poe’s most disturbing and psychologically powerful short stories.

The story is told by an unnamed narrator who begins by insisting that he does not expect anyone to believe what he is about to confess. He also reveals immediately that he is condemned to die the following day, although the reader does not learn the full reason until the terrible events of the story unfold.

At first, the narrator describes himself as gentle and deeply fond of animals, particularly his large black cat, Pluto. Yet as his personality deteriorates, his affection turns into cruelty. Alcohol, rage, guilt, superstition, and an increasingly destructive state of mind gradually transform ordinary domestic life into horror.
