A story about body awareness, courage, and the joy of learning.

Leni notices many things that others overlook. She hears when a room becomes quiet, senses uncertainty, and recognizes when a child makes themselves smaller than they really are. Oscar is different. He wants to begin, jump, try things out, and show right away that he is brave. But in the ballet studio, both of them discover that learning needs more than courage and good intentions.

In this story, Leni and Oscar enter a ballet studio. There is music, a barre, a mirror, first steps, wobbly knees, and a teacher who does not only correct movements, but helps children understand their bodies better.

On the wall, the children discover a special tree: the Ballet Tree. Its roots are called Body Knowledge, Nutrition, Recovery, and Self-Respect. On the trunk stand Planning and Motivation. From it grow branches such as Technique, Activation, Communication, Attention, Memory, and Materials. In the leaves, Practice, Correction, Expression, Group Learning, and Performance become visible. At the very top stands Assessment.

Leni and Oscar and the Secret of the Ballet Tree tells the story of children who learn that dancing is not only about beautiful movements. A body is not an opponent that has to be defeated. It is part of oneself, and it is allowed to learn.

Mila discovers that she may become visible without pretending to be bigger than she is. Finn notices that a joke can protect, but it can also hide. Benno learns that joy needs measure. Lea recognizes that beauty may receive meaning. Paul discovers that order can carry others. And Leni and Oscar understand that courage and attention are not opposites.

This is not about perfect turns, perfect jumps, or perfect performances. It is about growing step by step without going against oneself.

This children’s book addresses child-friendly topics such as:
  • body awareness and body knowledge
  • courage, patience, and self-confidence
  • self-respect and fair self-assertion
  • learning without pressure or shame
  • dealing with mistakes and correction
  • motivation, attention, and practice
  • group learning and performance
  • joy in learning and artistic expression
The story is suitable for children, parents, teachers, ballet teachers, dance educators, and anyone who would like to talk with children about body awareness, learning, courage, self-respect, and healthy development.

Leni and Oscar and the Secret of the Ballet Tree is a warm, child-friendly book about ballet, learning, and the question of what a child needs in order to grow safely, bravely, and with joy.

Because a tree does not grow because it is perfect. It grows because it has roots.
