On a March night in 1932, an infant disappeared from the nursery of one of America's most famous families.

Charles Lindbergh Jr., the 20-month-old son of aviator Charles Lindbergh and Anne Morrow Lindbergh, was taken from the family's New Jersey home. A ransom note demanding $50,000 was discovered, beginning one of the most intensely followed criminal investigations in American history.

What followed was a maze of ransom notes, mysterious intermediaries, false leads, desperate negotiations, newspaper headlines, and an enormous nationwide search. Dr. John Condon became the family's intermediary, eventually handing $50,000 in ransom to a mysterious man calling himself “John.” The promised return of the child never came.
Two months after the kidnapping, the child's body was discovered near the Lindbergh estate. The investigation continued for more than two years, producing thousands of leads and drawing together local police, federal investigators, handwriting experts, banks, witnesses, and emerging forensic techniques.

Then came the breakthrough.

Gold certificates from the ransom began appearing again. A suspicious transaction eventually led investigators to Bruno Richard Hauptmann, a German carpenter living in the Bronx. Investigators found ransom money connected to him and developed additional evidence involving handwriting, the famous wooden ladder, tools, and other clues. Hauptmann was arrested on September 19, 1934.
His sensational 1935 trial became a national event. The prosecution relied heavily on circumstantial and physical evidence, including handwriting comparisons, ladder evidence, and ransom money. Hauptmann was convicted of first-degree murder and sentenced to death. He was executed in 1936.
But the significance of the Lindbergh kidnapping reached far beyond one courtroom.

The case helped demonstrate the growing role of scientific investigation and federal coordination in major crimes. It also occurred while Congress was debating federal kidnapping legislation; following the national shock surrounding the case, Congress enacted what became known as the Lindbergh Law, expanding the federal role in kidnapping investigations.
