The history of Sicily for the first eight centuries A.D. does not have Sicily as its protagonist: it has, in sequence, as its leading actors the Western Roman Empire, two Germanic peoples, and the Eastern Roman Empire (by then known as the Byzantine Empire). The goal of this volume is to reconstruct the events, in an era in which historiographical sources are particularly scarce, and above all to raise the question of the island's identity.
