Rather than treating “the occult” as a universal religion or uninterrupted secret tradition, the Chronicle examines many historically distinct systems that addressed secrecy, fate, death, sacred authority, altered consciousness, invisible agency, divination, ritual causation, mystical experience, and the relationship between human beings and the cosmos.
Each entry asks not only what happened, but who was involved, when and where it occurred, why it mattered, how the knowledge traveled, and what later traditions inherited, rejected, revised, suppressed, misunderstood, or revived. The book also follows the material history of occult knowledge through clay tablets, papyri, manuscripts, monuments, translations, archives, and printed texts.
A five-level evidence system distinguishes directly attested events from strong reconstruction, disputed interpretation, traditional attribution, and legendary or mythic chronology. Ancient claims of revelation and sacred antiquity are preserved as historical evidence without being confused with independently established fact.
