Athenagoras of Athens (Ἀθηναγόρας ὁ Ἀθηναῖος) was a Christian apologist of the second century. He was born around 115 AD and died around 190 AD. He is rightly regarded as both a philosopher and a Christian.
Not much is known about his life, but his writings  —like those of many eminent authors of the past—speak for themselves. His Plea for the Christians (also known as Embassy for the Christians) was written around 177 AD.
It is striking how history repeats itself. Today, as in the days of the early Church, Christians are often persecuted and falsely accused. From the time of Jesus onward, Christians have been called to defend themselves—innocent, yet often treated as guilty, for no other reason than their love of Truth and the Gospel.
May this work serve as an encouragement for this generation as well.
