Transcendental Magic, its Doctrine and Ritual is A. E. Waite's 1896 translation of Éliphas Lévi's Dogme et Rituel de la Haute Magie, first published in two volumes in 1854 (Dogme) and 1856 (Rituel). In these companion volumes Lévi assembles a systematic treatise on ritual and ceremonial magic, setting out a Hermetic, symbolic framework that links alchemy, Kabbalah, and the tarot. Waite’s version made Lévi’s complex symbolism and ritual philosophy accessible to a much wider audience, securing the text’s place as a cornerstone of Western occult literature. The book has been widely influential in the development of modern Western esotericism, informing ceremonial orders, occult scholars, and later translators and commentators. Its blend of symbolic exegesis, ritual instruction and philosophical reflection helped establish many of the motifs and vocabularies that occultists and students of the tarot continue to draw on today, and it remains a cornerstone text for anyone researching ritual magic, Hermeticism, tarot symbolism, and the history of the occult.
