The roots of our modern musical system lie so deeply embedded in antiquity that it is impossible to trace the early history of its notation without reference to the Greek system from which it has sprung; and this in volves the use of certain words, found in ancient treatises, which are as unfamiliar to modern musicians and Greek scholars as the technicalities of modern musical structure are to the general public.
