The great importance of cable systems in many industrial and non-industrial fields was the starting point for the development of this book.
The classical books concerning the three-dimensional non-linear dynamics of wires are dedicated to the theoretical aspect; in particular, only linear and second-order approximations are considered.
In this book the wave propagation problem is analysed and solved numerically by the method of the characteristics for longitudinal and transverse motion of the cable in three-dimensions, taking into account all the geometrical non-linearities (large deformations).
The book covers all the classical subjects and,in addition, the dynamics of tethered satellite systems, tethered aerostatic balloons, sail and towed airplanes, impact against cables.
This book bridges the gap between theory and applications. All the problems are solved using MATLAB. The complete software listings included can be viewed as a “toolbox” in wire dynamics.
The book is suitable to post-graduate applications in mechanical engineering, applied mathematics and physics.
