There is a certain philosophical tendency, if I can borrow a formulation from Robert Frodeman here, to think of earth (not the Earth, but “earth” in the sense of soil, sub-soil, sedi- ment) as being “beneath us” (see Frodeman, 2024). The lithic cave of Plato’s allegory is not, after all, a space we are meant to stay. The result, I think, is that the scope of the geolog- ical—so, of mineral deposit, shale and stone—often enters philosophy less as a field of genuine inquiry, than as a met- aphor for what we are supposed to leave behind.
