In a working note from the course Husserl at the Limits of Phenomenology, Maurice Merleau-Ponty refers to the par- adox of the horizon, which is a way of expressing a problem that runs through every phase of his philosophical reflec- tion: the tension between the inherence in the world typical of the phenomenological subject and the disembodiment characteristic of the subject as conceived by rationalism. I propose to take this passage as a starting point in order to develop an account of the conception of the transcenden- tal which Merleau-Ponty elaborates in the final years of his work, through a sustained confrontation with Edmund Hus- serl. This confrontation leads him to push phenomenology beyond its own limits — a move that, in my view, helps us grasp the meaning of the title of the course.
