Troilus and Cressida #429348

Complex, Sharp, and Surprisingly Modern

Troilus and Cressida by William Shakespeare is a fascinating and unconventional play that blends romance, war, satire, and disillusionment. Set against the backdrop of the Trojan War, it explores love, honour, reputation, and the gap between heroic ideals and human behaviour.

Shakespeare’s treatment of the characters is often ironic and psychologically sharp, giving the play a darker and more ambiguous tone than many of his better-known works.

This Bauer Books edition is a great choice for readers who enjoy Shakespeare, classical drama, and thought-provoking works with complex characters and moral tension. A challenging but very rewarding read.

Here, as in Romeo and Juliet, passion and violence are inextricably linked. Indeed, this later play often seems to be a dark parody of the earlier, with Pandarus--a debased version of both Nurse and Friar--pimping the two young lovers, and the final "tragedy" resolving itself in the death--not of two brave lovers--but of love and bravery themselves.
