She came home to save her late father's clinic. He came home to hide from the worst night of his career. Neither of them planned on staying.

Physiotherapist Sloane Bergeron left a glass-walled sports clinic in Vancouver to keep her dad's tiny practice alive in Frostbite Lake, a snowbound town in northern Ontario where half her patients pay in pie and the furnace sounds like a goose in a dryer. She has a ramp to shovel, a stack of overdue bills, and zero time for a grumpy pro hockey player with a bad knee.

Defenseman Declan Rourke has been sent home on a twelve week conditioning stint after a knee injury and a fight video that went everywhere. His rehab is at Sloane's clinic three mornings a week. His community service is helping coach the Frostbite Lake Lynx, the worst junior team in the league. And the blunt, sunny woman taping his players' ankles in her late father's windbreaker is the girl he walked past at sixteen without a second look.

Between dawn pond hockey, maple taffy on snow, a Winter Carnival the whole town loses its mind over, and a ragtag team learning to trust each other on the power play, the town starts to feel like home again. Then his team calls him back in the middle of the Lynx playoff run, and Declan has to decide what kind of man he wants to be when the season ends.

  • Grumpy athlete meets sunshine-but-blunt heroine
  • Forced proximity: his rehab is at her clinic
  • Small town ensemble with a meddling grandmother and a moose head in a party hat
  • Outdoor pond hockey, a Winter Carnival, and an underdog junior team
  • Dual point of view, clean and warm, with a guaranteed happy ending
