They called me the furniture. They forgot furniture has eyes.
For eleven years I ran the Dry Well, poured the club’s whiskey, and stood at Saint’s side without ever asking for more than the right to stay. I came to the Smoke Kings with forty-one dollars, a dead car, and a black eye my father gave me on the way out the door. These men took me in. I’d have bled for any one of them — and most days I thought I already had.
Then Saint brought her into my bar.
Sienna. Younger. Softer. The kind of woman a club opens its arms to without a second thought. He told me to make her feel welcome — he just never got around to mentioning he’d already made room for her in his bed.
Everyone said I was jealous. The bitter old lady losing her grip on her man, going sour the way they always do. I let them believe it. Because the bitter old lady was the only soul in that clubhouse paying attention to the rest of it — the questions Sienna asked that no sweetheart should care about, the nights she slipped out the back, the name she breathed into a phone when she thought the furniture wasn’t listening.
I know what I saw. I know something is coming for the Smoke Kings — something patient and close and already inside the walls. And I know exactly who held the door open and smiled while it walked in.
But I’m the woman being replaced. The one nobody trusts and nobody watches anymore. Say it out loud and I’m wrong, and I lose the last thread of my place beside him. Stay quiet and I’m right, and the men who saved my life are already dead — they just haven’t fallen yet.
So I’ll do what the furniture does best. I’ll watch. I’ll wait. And when the moment comes, I’ll make every man who stopped seeing me remember my name.
Saint stopped looking at me the day he let her in.
He has no idea what the furniture has been watching — or what it’s about to do.
