The Myth of King Arthur and the Process of Individuation - Psychoanalytic Reflections on the Theme of Identity #1013401

What can the legend of King Arthur teach us about the journey of becoming who we truly are?
In this original and thought-provoking essay, Giacomo Gaggero explores the Arthurian legend through the lens of Carl Gustav Jung’s psychology, revealing a profound symbolic representation of the process of individuation: the lifelong journey through which each person discovers and develops their unique identity.
From the sword in the stone to the founding of Camelot, from Arthur’s relationship with Merlin, Guinevere, and Lancelot to the quest for the Holy Grail and the final confrontation with Mordred, the great episodes of the legend emerge as powerful images of the challenges, transformations, and turning points that shape human existence.
Drawing on Jungian analytical psychology and the insights of major psychoanalytic thinkers, Gaggero examines the relationship between personal identity and the unconscious, the significance of psychological crises, and the role of suffering, love, and self-knowledge in the development of the individual.
The Arthurian myth becomes a mirror of our own inner experience, illuminating the tensions between our deepest aspirations and the psychological defenses that can obscure them. Through its archetypal figures and dramatic events, the legend offers a way of understanding the difficult and often mysterious process of becoming ourselves.
Combining literary interpretation, psychological theory, philosophical reflection, and clinical observations, The Myth of King Arthur and the Process of Individuation offers a rich exploration of the relationship between mythology and the human psyche.
Written for readers interested in Jungian psychology, psychoanalysis, mythology, and the search for personal identity, as well as for professionals working in psychotherapy and the helping professions, this book invites us to recognize the mythic dimension of our own lives.
At its heart lies a fundamental question: how do we become what we are?
