The White Peacock, D. H. Lawrence’s first novel, introduces many of the themes that would define his later work: the conflict between instinct and convention, the fragile bonds between men and women, and the powerful influence of landscape upon human emotion.
At the heart of the novel are the tangled relationships of George, Lettie, Leslie, and Cyril—young people struggling to reconcile passion with social expectations and the choices that shape their lives. Against the vivid backdrop of rural England, Lawrence portrays a world where nature seems intensely alive, while human relationships are marked by longing, frustration, and loss. Lyrical, sensual, and psychologically perceptive, The White Peacock is both a compelling story of love and disillusionment and the remarkable beginning of one of the most distinctive literary voices of the twentieth century.

D. H. Lawrence (1885–1930) was an English novelist, poet, essayist, and short-story writer, regarded as one of the most influential authors of the twentieth century. His work explores love, sexuality, nature, social conventions, and the conflicts between instinct and modern society. Among his best-known novels are Sons and Lovers, Women in Love, The Rainbow, and Lady Chatterley’s Lover. The White Peacock, published in 1911, was his first novel.
