Lina Shtern helped define one of the most important ideas in modern neuroscience: the blood-brain barrier.
But her life was also a story of other barriers — borders, languages, exile, Jewish persecution, Soviet ideology, prison walls, and the brutal line between truth and power.
Born in the Russian Empire and educated in Geneva, Shtern became the University of Geneva’s first woman professor before moving to the Soviet Union, where she rose to the highest ranks of Soviet science. Her research on the blood-brain barrier changed how doctors understood the brain, drugs, toxins, cerebrospinal fluid, and the body’s defenses. During World War II, her work helped shape urgent medical treatments for wounded soldiers and earned her public honor.
Then Stalin’s regime turned against her.
As a Jewish scientist with international connections, moral independence, and a record of speaking against anti-Jewish discrimination, Shtern became a target during the postwar anti-cosmopolitan campaign. Arrested in 1949 and tried with members of the Jewish Anti-Fascist Committee, she became the only defendant spared execution in the case remembered as the Night of the Murdered Poets.
Prison and exile were meant to erase her. They failed.
Lina Shtern: The Scientist Stalin Could Not Break tells the gripping story of a woman who crossed borders to become a scientist, helped uncover the body’s most mysterious protections, and survived one of the darkest purges of Stalin’s final years.
This is not only the story of a woman who studied barriers.
It is the story of a woman who kept crossing them.
