A Leader in the Chalet School #978930

Jack stood in the middle of her cubicle and looked round, taking it all in. Her eyes danced delightedly and her lips stretched almost literally from ear to ear in one broad grin. This was the Chalet School and she was here at last!
Her elder sister, Anne, was there too, but Anne didn’t really count over this in Jack’s estimation. When their parents, though very good in their own way, had issued a fiat that the Chalet School must wait until Jack was eleven, Anne had accepted it in her usual quiet way. Jack had not been quiet. In fact, she had made a complete nuisance of herself until one night when Dad, having put up with all the teasing he meant to, pulled her up short and sharp.
“O.K.—O.K.!” he had said when nine-year-old Jack had been pestering as usual. “You want to go to the Chalet School. Now listen to me, young woman! Go on like this, never giving anyone any peace on the subject, and, so far as you are concerned, it’ll be never! Got that? You’d better believe it.”
