Probably the novel Alexander the Great is one of the most successful novels by the prominent Armenian-Russian writer and poet Karen Ohanj (Karen Ohanjanyan). Being written only within a month, the novel touches upon the deepest layers of human inter-relations, the current trends of the development of the contemporary humanity, the philosophical tendencies explaining the role of man on Earth and his place in the whole of the universe, as well as his helplessness before life conditions and before the will of the Creator. Besides, the novel Alexander the Great is nothing but a human in the name of Man, just like all the other works of the writer.
Though endowed with superhuman qualities, the heroes of the novel are ordinary people with their own strong points and weaknesses. However, they all share the common belief in the victory of human reason over the power of evil and regression.
The writer is absolutely delicate in his description of the relations between the lovers – the wife, the husband and his boyfriend, whom the Creator has sent to Earth with a special mission - the mission of saving the planet Earth and the whole universe. The passionate love between the lead characters of the novel interweaves with that of the invention of the super-weapon – interactive bio-intellect which is to help the protagonist to save mankind from total extinction. The relations between the three characters are accompanied and guided by love in all its forms It is noteworthy, that the writer has managed to communicate the purity of these relations to the reader. The only thing that sheds some gloomy light on these positive relations is the vague cosmic yearning the main characters constantly feel for the previous life. This forces Alexander and his boyfriend Alan into isolation and a painful quest for answers to some questions about the origin, eternity and meaning of life.
The love and attachment Alexander feels for his mother, father and relatives, their inter-relations are in full harmony with the leitmotif of the story – the fight against the powers of Evil, which has taken the path of terror to halt the natural progress of humanity.
Finally, despite the sad ending, we can witness the complete victory of human reason over the dark folly. Moreover, the return of Alan and later that of Alexander to the Universe after the realization of the will of the Creator leave a myriad of questions for each of us to answer…
