On December 6, 1917, the city of Halifax, Nova Scotia experienced one of the most catastrophic man-made explosions in human history. In a moment that would change the course of the city's future, two ships collided in the harbor, setting off a chain of events that would result in an explosion so powerful it reshaped the landscape and claimed thousands of lives. This wasn't an act of war conducted by opposing armies, nor was it a deliberate attack. Instead, it was a tragic accident born from human error, negligence, and the fog of war.

The Halifax Explosion, as it came to be known, released energy equivalent to roughly 2,900 tons of TNT. To put that in perspective, it was the largest man-made explosion before the atomic bomb. The blast occurred during World War I, when the world was already reeling from four years of unprecedented conflict and suffering. Yet, despite the horrors of the war raging overseas, nothing could have prepared Halifax for the devastation that would unfold in their own harbor.
