The Prophecies of Nostradamus #954462

The work for which Nostradamus is remembered, Les Prophéties, first appeared in 1555 in Lyon under the title Les Prophéties de M. Michel Nostradamus. This inaugural edition contained three “Centuries” (groups of one hundred quatrains) and an incomplete fourth, composed in rhymed decasyllabic verse and organized in a non-chronological sequence. Subsequent editions expanded the corpus: by 1557 additional Centuries were printed, and the posthumous 1568 Lyon edition presented the text in what became the canonical form of ten Centuries (with the seventh incomplete), prefaced by two prose epistles—one addressed to his son César and the other to King Henry II of France. The publication history is complex, marked by variant editions, typographical inconsistencies, and suspected interpolations (...)
