I crave the indulgence of my learned colleagues if in this general review, intended for an ordinary public audience, 1 have not been able to acknowledge my several obligations to them individually, and to mention their names. Especially am I in debted to the brilliant and instructive investi gations of M. Maspero and M. W iedemann. Others will recognise in the following pages, alongside of my own personal opinions, the fruits of their labours and discoveries, which have now become common property.
