Giovanni Battista Belzoni discovered the tomb in 1817, and he im-mediately  realized   its   importance,   describing   it   as  “the principal, the most perfect and splendid monument in that country”(Belzoni 1820).
In this book Belzoni describes the excavations, the difficulties encountered during this extraordinary discovery and the amazement of being faced with this magnificent work.
