Overview

Empire of the Summer Moon (2010) is a historical account of the 40-year war for control over the American West between white settlers and Comanche Indians. American writer S.C. Gwynne recounts the history of the Comanche Nation, one of the most powerful tribes in American history, with a focus on the epic saga of the last and most prominent Comanche war chief, Quanah Parker, and his white mother Cynthia Ann Parker.
The white settlers believed it was their Manifest Destiny to claim American land in all its vastness. The existence of the Indian tribes, specifically the Comanche nation, greatly held up the development of the new American nation. So, they had to be disposed of one way or another. The war lasted 250 years until the Comanches ultimately surrendered.
