How we have followed out the plan of the publication, and, so far as we have gone, acquitted ourselves of the onerous task 'which de volved upon us, the public will be able to judge from this, the first volume, which we have now the pleasure of putting forward to the world. We have, at the same time, to apologise for the length of time the work has been in hands.
