In August 1883, a friend, though overladen with business cares, kindly offered to see the work through the press, but without being able to give it any thorough editorial revision. Much new material has been added, a oluminous correspondence has been entered into, many corrections, made necessary by an illegible manuscript and other causes, have been made, and the publication has thus been unavoidably delayed until now.
