Isle Royale, the largest island in Lake Superior, and the sec ond largest in the Great Lakes, lies within thirteen miles of the Canadian shore. Its greatest length is forty-four miles and, as the average breadth is five miles, it has an approximate area of one hundred and sixty thousand acres. The surface has been fairly well explored. The ownership of the land is divided among various individuals and corpora tions and, as a thorough survey has been made, the allotments sometimes do not exceed forty acres.
