The object of this work is in some measure to supply a want which the author believes is still felt by the general geologist, physical geographer, intelligent tourist, and heads of educational establishments, namely a detailed and systematised description of the more definite forms assumed by the natural scenery of England and Wales, and a full consideration of the causes to which they owe their existence, so far as they are the effects of denudation. The author would not have ventured upon such a task were it not that his occupation as lecturer on geology, &c., to provincial scientific institutions and schools, has furnished him with opportunities of visiting and revisiting almost every part of England, and a great part of Wales. Until lately, he purposely refrained from reading very much on the subject of denudation, lest a bias should be given to his opinions.
