For a long time, we believed that consciousness was a private matter, kept inside each person's head. A sort of closed room, an individual flame that illuminated only our inner world. Today, however, something is changing. Scientific research on collective behavior, discoveries in social neuroscience, contemporary theories of distributed mind, and even certain insights from contemplative traditions all seem to tell a different story: perhaps consciousness is not just "mine" or "yours." Perhaps it does not begin and end at the boundaries of our bodies. Perhaps, instead, there is a larger space in which we are immersed, a shared territory in which our thoughts, emotions, and perceptions are not separate but deeply intertwined. And this space  resembles, surprisingly, a diffuse field, something that envelops and permeates us, just like electromagnetic fields or the gravitational field. We do not see it, just as we do not see gravity, yet we perceive its effects. We do not touch it, just as we do not touch radio waves, yet we are constantly immersed in their influences. Everything suggests that there is a field of consciousness: a subtle, extensive field that belongs to no one but supports everyone. When two individuals enter into a relationship, it is not just a meeting between two minds: it is the local activation of this field. Something lights up, densifies, takes shape. This is why certain conversations seem to "think for themselves," why some rooms "vibrate" with a particular energy, why deeply connected groups seem to draw on an intelligence that exceeds the sum of the individual components of the group.
We can imagine this field of consciousness as a great ocean. An invisible ocean, but real in its effects, enveloping everything and passing through each of us. In this ocean, our individual consciousnesses are not separate entities: they are waves. Waves that emerge, take shape, rise and dissolve, leaving room for other waves. Each has its own appearance, its own rhythm, its own height, just as each of us has a history, a character, a way of feeling the world. But all waves belong to the same sea. None exist outside of it.
Thinking about consciousness in this way does not mean denying our individuality: it means seeing it within a broader context. Just as a wave does not lose its identity simply because it is made of the same water as the ocean, we do not lose ourselves when we recognize that we are part of something greater.
A second image can help us approach this same mystery from another angle: that of radio waves. Let's imagine that there is a large, always-active broadcaster that transmits a continuous stream of information, insights, and possibilities. Not a single, rigid message, but a range of frequencies, like a chorus of potentialities filling the space. And let's imagine human brains as tuned elements. They receive, decode, translate. But each does so in its own way, with a different sensitivity and quality of reception.
This is a book for those who wonder how human beings function when they are not alone. For those who sense that in the most intense moments of life something opens up, something circulates, something expands. For those who suspect that consciousness is not an object to be possessed, but a process to be shared. If it is true that we are knots in a great fabric, then perhaps it is time to learn to see it. And, above all, to live it. Because it is there, in that common space, that we truly become human.
