In order to make these papers available promptly, they are pre sented here as they were written. This means that, in many in stances, one paper is not responsive to relevant points which may have been raised in another, since they were written simultaneously. Similarly, no attempt is made to represent in detail the interactions that went on in discussing the various points of View. The selection of emphases in the introductory statement, the pointing to common threads and unresolved issues, is the Editor's responsibility.
