This little book represents the first attempt to apply the ordinary methods of legal study to the solution of Biblical problems. It consequently contains much that is new and unexpected — how unexpected my readers must decide. At the same time it will arouse justifiable hopes that light may be thrown on many a difficult passage by the great theoretical jurists, who possess a mastery of ancient law with which the mere dilettante knowledge of a practising lawyer can never be com pared.
