In the field both of Jew ish learning and of non-jewish thought he brought the attempts to perfection. He was a greater scholar, a greater philosopher than all his predecessors, but the feature that distinguishes him from all others and constitutes his ex ceptionability is that, differing from all of them, he undertook with perfect consciousness the task to utilize learne ing and thought for life. We are ac customed in our days to boast of being in possession of a pure science, an un conditioned philosophy, both indepen dent of time and space and taking no regard to the interests of lify.
