Thoughtful men have long ago noted a westward trend in the great movements of the world this is true not only as regards empire in a material but in a spiritual sense. It is possible, indeed, that some part of the following reflections on this subject may be considered fanciful, and with truth; yet the combined effect of them may profitably arrest the attention.
