Kaliyuga date is an important landmark in the search of the date of the Mahabharata war. On the very same day that Sri Krishna left the world –meaning went to the forest-, the Kaliyuga began. This happened 36 years after the war. By subtracting 36 years from the Kaliyuga, the year of the Mahabharata war can be obtained.

Kaliyuga is directly related to the precession of the equinoxes, according to Sri Yukteshwar. My modification of his technique indicated that the descending Kaliyuga of the previous charge started in -932 CE. Thirty-six years before this was -969 CE, the year of Bharata war.
To get the exact date of the war, the description of Bhisma's death is instrumental. He lived 58 days after being wounded on the 10th day of the war. He died on the Magha Shukla Ashtami day in Uttarayana. The Bharata war started on Wednesday 9 November -969 CE of the Gregorian calendar.

In this book, I have endeavoured to explain astronomically and historically important events based on the derived date of the war. This unique, unambiguous, absolute approach of mine differs from the previous superficial, ambiguous, relative approaches of others who fixed the date of the Bharata war based on several astronomical and historical events.

I would like to request the reader to study the correct principles and basics of Vedic astronomy in my other book titled ‘Resolving the controversies of Vedic astronomy & astrology’. I have briefly quoted from that book where necessary. Basic knowledge of astrology is also required to understand the astrological points given in the epic. Previous researchers missed the correct date because they failed to appreciate the difference between the astronomical winter solstice and Vedic Uttarayana and the difference between the synodic lunar months and seasonal lunar months. Blind faith in the spurious 3102 BC Kaliyuga took them several millennia away from the truth.

When I say the Mahabharata war took place in -969 CE, I am not alone. By analyzing Indian chronology, F. E. Pargiter proposed 950 BC. Combining both archaeological and historical evidence, B. B. Lal proposed 860 BC. Both historical and archaeological evidence can give an approximate date only. Only the astronomical factors give the time to the exact date.  In effect, only the -969 CE date is supported by all astronomical, historical and archaeological evidence. So-called ‘astronomical’ dates that have been proposed by other researchers beyond 2000 BC have no astronomical, archaeological or historical proof.

Unlike Ramayana, the author of the Mahabharata, Vyasa, was an eyewitness of the events. He narrated the events in his lifetime to Ganesha to record it. It ends with the destruction of the Pandava kings in the forest. This took place in -932 CE. Therefore, the epic must have been written in circa 930 BC.
