While housing conditions in the Chinatown area are to be deplored and the urgent need exists for better living accom modations with rents commensurate to earning power, the situation is far from hopeless. The response of the Chinese to suggestion, the adaptability of Oriental customs to Occidental living, the eager willingness of these people to participate in city-wide activities, their evident desire to be good citizens, should gain for them the interest, encouragement and aid of the whole community. None of the activities undertaken in the interests of these people should be curtailed, rather should they be extend-ed to the end that in a few years at least, the quoted description at the beginning of this-paper shall no longer be an identification of San Francisco's Chinatown.
