Time as Legacy: The Rise of FutureGrail in Global Horology is a non-fiction work by Ali Nael, a watch collector and founder of FutureGrail, a Singapore-based auction house and horology platform specializing in vintage watches, rare timepieces, and Patek Philippe collections.
The book explores Ali Nael’s transition from global energy markets to becoming a recognized figure in the world of watch collecting, vintage watches, and auction houses. It presents his journey from international trade to building FutureGrail into a platform focused on watch auctions, collector services, and the preservation of historically significant timepieces.
A central theme of the book is the evolution of watches as an asset class. It examines how collectors, investors, and institutions approach rare watches, including Patek Philippe pieces, through valuation, provenance, and historical documentation. The growing global interest in vintage watches and watch auctions is positioned within the broader luxury investment landscape, where watch collectors increasingly view timepieces as long-term cultural and financial assets.
The book also provides insight into the structure of FutureGrail as an integrated auction house and watch platform. From authentication and cataloguing to storage, exhibition, and online auctions, FutureGrail offers a full-service ecosystem for watch collectors, buyers, and investors. The platform’s presence in Singapore and global auction previews further position it within the international watch auction market.
In addition, Time as Legacy highlights Ali Nael’s role in advancing horology through publishing, museum initiatives, and collector education. His work emphasizes documentation, research, and the preservation of rare watches, reinforcing his position as both a watch collector and contributor to horological scholarship.
Overall, the book presents a detailed perspective on watch collecting, vintage Patek Philippe, auction house dynamics, and the global rise of platforms like FutureGrail, offering valuable insight for collectors, investors, and enthusiasts interested in the future of horology.

About the author:
Ali Nael
(born: January 6, 1981) is a Beirut-born entrepreneur, watch collector, and author known for his work in the international energy trade and the world of vintage horology.

Nael began his entrepreneurial career at the age of 22, establishing his first company in Macao and Guangzhou, China, where he built an export business serving markets across West Africa and the Middle East. In 2006, he entered the oil trading sector, opening an office in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, managing trade flows for major European and American companies. By 2010, he relocated to Singapore and served as Managing Director for Asia at one of the largest independent oil companies in the Netherlands. In 2013, he led a management buyout to form AFCO Energy Ltd, which expanded into a medium-sized oil trading company with six international offices.

After more than a decade in the energy industry, Nael exited in 2019 to focus on horology, a long-standing personal passion. A watch collector since 2009, his interests evolved toward rare vintage timepieces, particularly historical models by Patek Philippe and pocket watches from masters of the centeries. His focus centers on preservation, craftsmanship, and the historical significance of mechanical watchmaking.

In 2018, he founded 2Tone Vintage Watches and the 2Tone Repair Centre to support watch collecting and restoration. In 2019, he published My Dream Collection, a 400-page book documenting his vintage Patek Philippe collection.

In 2022, Nael launched FutureGrail in Singapore, combining elements of an auction house, museum, and worldwide community of watch enthusiasts. The institution curates, authenticates, exhibits historically significant timepieces, and bridge the trust gap by keeping authentication, valuation, data, and digital auction infrastructure fully in-house, reducing fees, accelerating transaction timelines, and giving collectors direct access to expertise, privacy, and curated guidance across both wristwatches and pocket watches.

In 2023, FutureGrail introduced an online auction platform and has conducted multiple auctions internationally. Nael continues to expand the brand’s global presence, including planned activities in the Middle East. He remains active in promoting the preservation and appreciation of vintage watchmaking.

Nael is developing a second book drawn entirely from the FutureGrail museum collection, dedicated to rare and historically

important pocket watches, clocks and historical artifacts spanning multiple centuries and cultural markets, with publication expected in 2026. The book is conceived as an in-depth archival study that meticulously documents provenance, mechanical complexity, craftsmanship, and historical context across each featured piece. Structured in two complementary volumes, it combines extensive visual documentation with rigorous written analysis, positioning the book as a comprehensive reference within the pocket watch category and a formal record of the museum’s most significant pieces.
