The Vietnam War, in the so-called “American Phase”, ended with the fall of Saigon in 1975, affected more than one generation, in America and in the whole world, besides obviously in Vietnam.
Following the scheme of his previous work Chronology of World War II 1939-1945, published in English language in 2020, Alessandro Giorgi does not limit himself to a detailed and meticulous description of the thousands military operations carried out daily by land, sea and in the air, quoting the military units involved, commanders and casualties, nor to the political decisions of the counterparts. There is the international contextualization of the conflict in the global USA-USSR confrontation, there are the most “hidden”, but nevertheless significant, if not surprising, details in the “melting pot” that Vietnam was at that time. To be noted the emphasis given to the “secret” war theaters in Laos and Cambodia, the role played by the South Vietnamese army and the non-American allies: South Koreans, Australians, New Zealanders, Thais among the others.
The indication of the turning points, from the military, political, and technological points of view, updated to the latest available historical research.
Integral part of this work are the annexes with a complete statistical report on all military forces involved, their development and equipment, the human and material losses, a complete index of names, the reference bibliography (more than 120 titles, plus archival sources and the CIA de-classified files) and last but not least an Order of Battle that, though necessarily synthetic, given the dimensions of the book, is a true state-of-the-art, considering that it covers the armed forces of all belligerents involved.
From the historiographical point of view, in this Author’s traditional path, an unprecedented work between the retrospective chronology and the encyclopedic dictionary.
The sources, thoroughly cross-checked, are not only bibliographical and archival, but also the direct personal contacts, exchanges, discussions and interviews with some of the world’s top experts in this field, between scholars, veterans, ex-agents of the CIA and of other American military and civil intelligence agencies.
