This book features a collection of 71 traditional melodies and songs, many of which are typically performed on string instruments such as the harp, fiddle, or banjo. These pieces are rarely arranged for percussion, making this adaptation for tongue drum both unique and refreshing.

Many of the melodies come from Celtic traditions, including Irish and Scottish tunes, but the collection also features a significant number of American songs, as well as some English and Australian folk melodies. It includes love songs, ballads, drinking and table songs, rustic melodies, and heroic ballads, all with lyrics. Additionally, the collection features instrumental dance tunes without lyrics. Each piece has been adapted for the tongue drum, making it easy to play for musicians of all levels.

Celtic melodies have a distinct character, rich with emotion and tradition. Irish folk songs are often melancholic and philosophical, focusing on themes of love, loss, and exile. They have deep psychological expression and a distinctive sorrow. Scottish songs have a more heroic tone, centered on battles, clans, and nature, often shaped by the sound of bagpipes. English and American folk songs are more narrative and down-to-earth, marked by sharp observation and a willingness to laugh at themselves. This collection offers an opportunity to rediscover these melodies, some of which may have been forgotten, yet remain deeply moving and poignant.

Designed for C-Major Tongue Drums
Most steel tongue drums are tuned to C-major, making them ideal for beginners and experienced players alike. If you own an 11-, 13- or 15-note tongue drum but are unsure of its tuning, it is most likely in C-major.

This book provides arrangements suitable for various C-major tongue drum sizes:
- 13-note or 15-note drums can play all 71 songs.
- 11-note drums can play 48 songs.
Steel tongue drums can be played with mallets or by hand, each method producing distinct tonal qualities. Beginners are encouraged to start with mallets for a clear, resonant sound before exploring hand techniques.

Here are some tips to enhance your playing:
- Begin with mallets, then gradually experiment with hand playing.
- Remove rings or jewelry to prevent unwanted noise.
- Strike near the edges of the tongues (not the center) for richer overtones.
- Lightly touching a tongue right after striking shortens the sound for a percussive
effect.
- Tapping the same tongue quickly with alternating hands creates a smooth, flowing
sound.
- Play multiple tongues simultaneously to create harmonies.
- Explore freely - there are no strict rules!

Playing by Numbers
This book uses a diatonic numbering system where notes are represented by numbers1 to 7. Dots above or below the numbers indicate notes from a higher or lower octave, respectively. The number of notes on your drum determines the range of songs you can play.

Enhance Your Learning with QR Codes
Each song includes a QR code linking to an audio recording. These recordings follow the exact notation in the book, helping you hear how each piece should sound when played on a tongue drum.
