Howard Phillips Lovecraft (1890-1937) was an American writer, poet, literary critic and essayist, recognized as one of the greatest writers of horror literature together with Edgar Allan Poe and considered by many to be one of the precursors of Anglo-American science fiction. His works, a contamination between horror, soft science fiction, dark fantasy and low fantasy, have often been described, even by himself, with the term weird fiction (where weird stands for "strange"), being recognized among the main origins of the modern literary genre of the new weird.
The Other Gods, written in 1921 and first published published in November 1933 in The Fantasy Fan, is a classic tale from the early career of Howard Phillips Lovecraft, one that bridges his Dunsanian fantasy phase with the cosmic horror that would define his later work. It’s This is a short and atmospheric story, deeply entrenched in Lovecraft’s Dreamlands cycle, though some scholars place it in a prehistoric Earth setting.
In summary, The Other Gods is a potent, early example of several key Lovecraftian themes:
hubris and punishment, cosmic horror, and the insignificance of man.
The story is also notable for introducing the mythical volume, The Seven Cryptical Books of Hsan, a canonical text in Lovecraft's lore.
