Howard Phillips Lovecraft (1890-1937) was an American writer, poet, literary critic and essayist, recognized as one of the greatest writers of horror literature together with Edgar Allan Poe and considered by many to be one of the precursors of Anglo-American science fiction. His works, a contamination between horror, soft science fiction, dark fantasy and low fantasy, have often been described, even by himself, with the term weird fiction (where weird stands for "strange"), being recognized among the main origins of the modern literary genre of the new weird.
The novella The Dream-Quest of Unknown Kadath, written in 1927, is one of Howard Phillips Lovecraft’s most distinct and ambitious works. This epic tale stands out within Lovecraft’s bibliography, bridging his characteristic cosmic horror with a style heavily influenced by the fantastical literature of Lord Dunsany. It’s the longest of the stories featuring Lovecraft’s recurring protagonist, Randolph Carter, and is considered the crowning achievement of his Dream Cycle. It is not a typical horror story but rather a sprawling dark fantasy picaresque—a chronicle of impossible adventures—that acts as a veritable guide to Lovecraft's meticulously crafted Dreamlands.
The novella's style is characterized by its richly archaic, lyrical, and descriptive prose, which evokes a sense of both profound wonder and underlying dread.
The story centers on Randolph Carter, a melancholy and contemplative dreamer, who has been granted visions of a magnificent, ethereal metropolis: the "Sunset City". However, after glimpsing the city three times, it is abruptly snatched away from his dreams by the "Gods of Earth".
