Scarcely anyone has realized that neither his detractors nor his supporters. It is in the name of morality that every one attacks him or defends him: a task which is easier in the former case than in the latter. But morality is narrower than life — and less complex. Unlike life, it does not carry in its tragic texture those sublime contra dictions which by continuous opposition to each other create the substance of a hero and prevent him from being either more or less than a man.
