Emmett stared out the window at the prairie, keeping his thoughts to himself. Warden Williams was a modern man with a master’s degree and good intentions. He had notions that he’d gathered from books and experience, and Emmett didn’t want to get into all that now. Some of the young men who come to Salina, Kansas, are destined for a life of trouble. They were never given much sense of right or wrong as children and see little reason for learning it now.
As a civilized society, we ask that even those who have had an unintended hand in misfortune pay some retribution. The rancher, Mr. Ransom, had paid his debt to society and now had his whole life ahead of him. But he didn’t agree that his debt had been paid in full. The kitchen looked cleaner than at any point in Emmett’s memory. On the table was a brown folder thick with papers as if it had been left there by somebody else.
Emmett and Mr. Ransom made no effort to respond. Walter explained that your father took out a new loan three years ago on top of the old mortgage. This year, what with your father’s passing, there will not be a harvest at all. Banker Emmett Ransom Obermeyer looked at his father’s estate with a mixture of skepticism and sympathy.
