Some days, the city wins.
Kate has survived twelve New York Mondays worse than this one. She's a marketing supervisor with a product launch due, a CEO presentation in forty-eight hours, and a team that is collectively, spectacularly difficult to assemble in the same room at the same time.
Today she has exactly one hour, a dying laptop, a coffee shop that isn't hers, and a phone call holding together a meeting that probably shouldn't be happening at all.
What could go wrong?
The conference room was taken. Jim was across town, unreachable by Zoom because his phone had run out of storage — a fact he had discovered, apologetically, approximately three minutes after lunch ended. The laptop was five years old and showed it. And somewhere between the ramen and the second iced matcha latte, Kate had realized that this was simply how things got done — not cleanly, not efficiently, not in any way that would make a good case study — but done nonetheless, in borrowed spaces, on borrowed time, with people who showed up however they could.
Mrs. Leyla swept around them without complaint, the way she always did.
