Thematics IN japan prepared by myself and published conjointly with this book, will account for very many shortcomings both in form and content to be found in these Divisional Reports now bound in one volume. It is much to be regretted that our best intentions were forbidden the support of our best energies. Moreover, in the work of translating the Japanese original into English, far greater difficulties were experienced than were anticipated, and indeed to such a degree as would be almost incredible to those who had no hand in it.
