The author has spared no cost and pains in gaining access to the original documents and other sources, many of which are indicated by the photographic reproductions. The work is written in a style which, it is hoped, will prove readable, but at the same time keep the reader in touch with the sources. No statement has been made in the work without refer ence to a reliable source.
