Samuel Reynolds House of Siam #652484

Samuel Reynolds House (1817-1899) was a pioneer and leading member of the Siam Mission of the Presbyterian Church U.S.A. Born in New York, he graduated from Union College with bachelor and master’s degrees, and received his medical doctorate from the College of Physicians and Surgeons in New York City in 1845. He was appointed to the Siam Mission in April 1845 but did not arrive in Bangkok until March 1847. By 1852 he had abandoned medical work to undertake full-time evangelism and later education work also. During his first furlough, 1855-56, he married Harriet M. Pettit and was ordained a minister in 1856. The Houses served in Siam until 1886, leaving du to his wife’s poor health. She died in 1893 and he in 1899. The book discussing the ministry of Dr. House was, published in 1924, was written by George Haws Feltus (1868-1936).
