Joey Maynard, sitting correcting the proofs of her latest book at a table in the sunny south window of the salon of her home on the Görnetz Platz, what time Rosalie Dene, secretary of the Chalet School next door, and one of her oldest friends, dealt firmly with the correspondence of the said school at the old Georgian sécrétaire near the west window, looked up from her work with a broad grin which Rosalie did not see. She was much too busy with the letter which had called forth her remarks.
“Of course, I’ll do what in me lies, though I should hardly imagine that anyone is likely to refer to me for your epitaph,” she said in her blandest tones.
“Eh?” said Rosalie, startled into lifting her eyes from the epistle.
