Once upon a time there was a boy called Jolly Calle who was always as happy as happy could be. He was a poor boy and quite alone in the world, for he had lost both his father and mother. If anyone pitied him on account of this misfortune he would answer:<br><br>"Well, at any rate I had a father and mother once, and I remember them both quite well. I remember being whipped by my father, and my mother wiping away my tears and kissing me. I am quite sure they are both in heaven now, for all the loving care they gave me here on earth, and I ought not to wish my parents back again out of heaven, ought I? Just think of those who can't remember ever having set eyes on their parents! You may be sorry for them if you like!" And then Calle would laugh.
